The curtain rises Friday, February 14 on the eleventh annual Dudley Players Shakespeare production. This year, the students will present the comedy, “Much Ado about Nothing.”
This year, 22 fifth graders will take the stage as actors in the tale of two couples who are in love and the trials and tribulations of getting to the altar for Benedick and Beatrice and Claudio and Hero.
Mary Silkey, who coordinates the gifted and talented program at Dudley Magnet School, explained the students have been studying William Shakespeare’s life in Elizabethan England. “They have been immersed in the poetic Elizabethan language,” she said. “Most have become quite competent at interpreting meaning.”
Besides learning about Shakespeare and his times, Silkey noted the students are also developing public speaking and stage skills. “Most of all, the kids learn that working hard at something will result in great reward at the end.”
Dudley students will share the experience in a performance on Friday, February 14 at 9:30 a.m. in the Victoria fine Arts Center. A public performance is set for the same evening at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
